Connected Data – tool data plugin at Koziol

Besides its green and sustainability agendas, the company Koziol is especially interested in digitalisation. That's why Hoffmann Group’s innovative plugin Connected Data was just the thing the manufacturer of charming plastic household goods was after.

Shorter work prep times mean starting production more quickly – now easier than ever with Connected Data

When you’re looking to simplify and optimise work routines, Hoffmann Group is always coming up with unexpected innovations, especially for the digital segment. One of these innovations is an inconspicuous but potent tool data plugin called Connected Data. It provides an interface that immediately supplies all your required tool and cutting data at a single click. This was precisely the reason Dominic Stegmüller decided to put the new tool to the test – but in the design phase rather than in production. A CAM programmer, he has years of experience from working in tool and mould construction with the company Koziol, based in Erbach in the Odenwald mountains. Koziol specialises in manufacturing designer goods and home accessories made of plastic.

Brilliantly simple – simply brilliant

Koziol’s Mr Stegmüller has always ‘loved pushing innovation’. So when Hoffmann Group approached him with Connected Data, he didn’t need to think twice before signing up. And now, after the first trial phase, the tool designer is absolutely delighted with the digital tool. He is especially taken with its ease of use: ‘Connected Data is fundamentally just like Mastercam's tool manager, which means you need no extra training whatsoever, you just start using the plugin alongside. If I see while I’m working that I’m missing a tool, I open the matching window and select the tool I want. And that’s why I love it, because it’s just so simple.’

Another good thing about Connected Data is that it was already a pretty stable build as a beta. It took just two or three meetings between teams to get it ready for use. No teething problems anywhere. Any issues that did arise were resolved in next to no time. The only thing Stegmüller would criticise is that the tool presently supports only drilling, thread-cutting and milling tools. Turning tools aren’t included – but Hoffmann Group will be sorting that out as part of the product maturity process.

A simple plugin in the CAD/CAM software provides access to tool selection including all dimension data and cutting data.

Better, safe, precise

The fact is: Using Connected Data will save you time in CNC programming because you’ll always have the latest technology and product data. And Dominic Stegmüller has found something else he considers a key benefit: ‘What I think is really important is the data reliability and geometry accuracy. The plugin supplies me with geometry from my tool one-to-one.’ So I know exactly what my object will look like in the end, and that’s just brilliant. This, too, cuts time. And also provides better, reliable data.

Just simulate new cutting parameters and save time: only a single click with Connected Data.

No more tiresome searching

Stegmüller’s coworkers are also doing fine working with Connected Data – after all, it is self-explanatory and they all already know the drill, as it were. All of this holds true for changing materials, too. Almost misty-eyed, our mould designer tells us: ‘When we want new cutting data, we adopt them straight from Hoffmann-world and I can just keep on working. None of that tiresome searching. I input another material, let the calculations run and get my results, snap.’ And, to conclude, Stegmüller praises working with Hoffmann Group: ‘Data handling is really easy, and then there’s the option to place orders directly in Connected Data. I get suggestions that I can drop straight into my shopping basket. Two clicks and I’ve placed my order, which is on my doorstep the next day.’

Delicate geometries in tool and mould construction require the right tools – which are easy to find with the new plugin for CAD/CAM programs.

Koziol ideas for friends GmbH

Koziol has been running its production facilities at its premises in Erbach/ Odenwald, Germany, since 1927. They have set up remarkably integrated manufacturing: design, development, engineering, mould construction, production, shipping and administration are all on the same premises, on-site. Koziol’s philosophy to manufacture all of its products entirely in Germany, which it has pursued steadfastly to this day, makes the company a hallmark of responsible, visionary action and design for a clear conscience. Since 1 January 2013, Koziol has powered its production exclusively with renewable energy. When purchasing materials, suppliers based in Germany are openly given precedence. Likewise, keeping production in one place eliminates long transport routes. Winner of the German Sustainability Award 2021. Find out more at www.koziol.de
